San Luis Obispo (which literally means Saint Louis the Bishop in Spanish) is a cultural hub of California’s Central Coast. San Luis Obispo is considered to be one of the oldest cities in California; Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa was founded in 1772 by Father Junipero Serra as one of California’s chain of 21 missions. The mission was named after Saint Louis who was the Bishop of Toulouse, France during the 13th century. The city originally incorporated as a General Law city in 1856 and later became a Charter city in 1876.
